Interconnection
Interconnection is the utility’s approval to connect a generating system to the grid, and the process of obtaining it. It is separate from the building permit, runs on the utility’s timeline, and ends with permission to operate — the point at which a system may legally export.
Interconnection software is generally sold to utilities and programme administrators rather than to installers, which makes it a different market from permitting software even though both sit in the same part of a project timeline.
In the UK the equivalent is a DNO application under G98 or G99; in India it is a DISCOM net-metering application. These are different regulatory regimes, not variants of one feature.
Why it matters
It is usually the longest pole in the schedule, and the one an installer controls least.
