STC (small-scale technology certificate)
STCs are tradeable certificates created under Australia’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme when an eligible solar system is installed. They are typically assigned to the retailer as an upfront discount, and creating and trading them is a distinct category of Australian software.
The certificate is the discount: most Australian solar quotes are net of STC value, so certificate creation is part of the sales process rather than an afterthought.
Formbay states it processes roughly one in three Australian residential solar and battery installations. Notably, one Australian solar CRM in this dataset never mentions STCs at all — a real capability gap in its home market, and one only visible because compliance is tracked per jurisdiction.
Why it matters
In Australia, software that cannot create STCs is missing a step your business cannot skip.
